RI Energy claims customer relief credits plan withdrawn due to lapsed deadline
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Energy customer relief credits are at the center of a Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission meeting that began Wednesday morning.
RI Energy had considered giving customers $75 a month in relief money, but withdrew the plan when the agreement approval time window lapsed.
The credits would have been for January through March of 2026 and 2027.
A Rhode Island Energy representative commented on the matter saying in part:
We developed a voluntary proposal to provide meaningful bill credits to our customers during the most challenging months of this winter and next. Through a collaborative effort with the Advocacy Section of the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers, that proposal underwent substantial negotiation, resulting in an agreement that was ultimately approved by the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers following a public hearing.
Unfortunately, that agreement has since faced unexpected and unwarranted opposition seeking to change the terms that were reached through a lengthy process. We have concluded that the agreement will not advance at this time, however, we do hope to advance these credits again at some time in the future.
The company said that they will work to provide alternative solutions to customer energy costs for the coming winter.
