9-year-old boy from Warwick gets hundreds of birthday cards from around the world
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – Brady Wright had high hopes for his 9th birthday this year.
“I wanted to visit all around the world,” Brady said.
The boy from Warwick wanted to visit different states, but because of COVID, his mom, April Wright says that wasn’t possible.
“We tried to make it normal, but it’s not really possible,” April said. “We have a small group of friends we’ve been seeing, but other than that it’s been staying home and not being able to do the things we usually do.”
She says it’s been a tough year for Brady and she wanted to find a way to make his birthday special, so she took to Facebook.
“We were trying to think of ways we could celebrate since going around and traveling isn’t possible,” April said. “I just went online and asked a few groups of people if anyone would send him a card from where they lived. The amount of responses we got has been overwhelming.”
Ever since the Facebook post, the Wrights say mail has been coming in from across the world. They hit their 50th state on his birthday Monday and that’s when he got to open all of the cards.
His mom says she never expected a response like this and it’s a birthday he’ll never forget.
“I thought maybe he’d get a few states or some friends and family in other states would have friends who would be willing to send, but I mean people have sent gifts and asked what he liked and wanted to be his pen pal, so it’s been crazy!”
Brady and his brother, Julian, spent the entire morning opening card after card. The 9-year-old said he hopes to visit those places one day, but until then, he has hundreds of places to read and learn about.
“I really like that people send me cards,” Brady said. “It’s really happy for me.”
