Single live bullet found at West Warwick school, classes canceled for day
WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — A single live bullet was discovered in the girls’ locker room at Deering Middle School Friday morning, prompting a police investigation and an early dismissal of classes.
According to West Warwick Public Schools Superintendent Karen A. Tarasevich, the bullet was reported to school administrators and the West Warwick Police Department.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
Superintendent Tarasevich said in a statement, in part:
The item was secured, no weapon was found, and all students and staff are safe. Given the seriousness of the discovery and out of an abundance of caution, our administration made the decision to close Deering Middle School and West Warwick High School for the remainder of the day to allow law enforcement to conduct a thorough and complete investigation.
We recognize that incidents like this may feel deeply unsettling, particularly in light of the recent Providence tragedy. Nothing is more important than the safety of our school community. Our district is working closely with the West Warwick Police Department and will be fully cooperating with their investigation.
