CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man accused of striking an officer and a bystander with his car before he was shot by police has been ordered held without bail.
Hazael DeLeon received the order Thursday morning during his arraignment for a probation violation.
The 25-year-old was arraigned the previous day on charges that include assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
Police say officers tried to arrest the man in Cranston Wednesday when he drove at them, put his car into reverse and hit a police cruiser.
Police say DeLeon then hit a bystander and an officer who became partially trapped and was being dragged. A second officer opened fire, hitting DeLeon.
He suffered non-life threatening injuries.
