PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — It was a heartbreaking start to the holidays for three families after fire damaged their home and killed two pets.

The incident occurred at a house on Superior Street Wednesday night.

Fire officials say it started on the first floor before shooting up to the second and third floors.

While firefighters were able to rescue two dogs and two cats, one resident ABC6 News his cat and dog did not make it.

He says he was in his third floor apartment when a neighbor told him to get out.

“Once I came downstairs at the middle of the staircase all you saw was flames coming up the side of the living room. So as soon as I saw that I live on the third floor I ran out and just started screaming,” said resident Noel Acosta. “I tried to go back inside but there was just no way there was too much smoke.”

“It’s a tough time of year. It’s something that happens yearly. But it’s part of what we do. It is a sad time to have this tragedy happen to a family,” said Battalion Chief Kevin Dolan.

In all, six adults and six children are now homeless. The Red Cross is assisting them.
