PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — In a letter to the Brown University community on Tuesday, Brown University interim vice president for public safety Hugh Clements outlined the new security measures being made to create a “safe and secure campus” after the deadly shooting on Dec. 13.

Clements is the former chief of the Providence Police Department.

According to Clements, there will be an increased police presence in academic buildings and residential areas, as well as the expansion of blue light phones and panic buttons across campus.

Additionally, all buildings will require a card or University ID for entry.

Clements added that key areas across campus, including the Barus and Holley building, will receive additional security cameras.

The Brown community will also be offered safety training and active-shooter preparedness trainings during the spring semester.

“Our goal is not to create a campus defined by fear, but one defined by preparedness, vigilance and mutual care,” Clements said. “We are committed to maintaining a campus where every member of this community — students, faculty, staff and visitors — can learn, work and live with confidence that they are doing so in spaces that support a strong academic mission while also being secure.”
