Rhode Island safety officials urge sober driving ahead of New Year’s Eve

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association, Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and other safety officials gathered on Tuesday to discuss the dangers of impaired driving ahead of New Year’s Eve.

During the joint press conference, safety officials reminded residents to plan ahead for a safe ride home, and to drink responsibly.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts everyone on the road at risk,” AAA Northeast Director of Public Relations Jillian Young said.” Make a plan before celebrations begin, whether that’s designating a sober driver or taking a rideshare service or taxi, and help ensure everyone can celebrate the New Year’s holiday safely.”

According to RIPCA, more than 40 DUI patrols are deployed between Christmas Eve and New Year’s to catch impaired drivers.

“Impaired driving remains one of the most persistent threats to public safety, killing and injuring people from all walks of life,” MADD Rhode Island Program Director Wesley Pennington said.

RIPCA said the first offense for driving under the influence carries the following penalties:

  • Possible jail sentence of up to one year
  • Mandatory license suspension from three to 18 months
  • Mandatory community service from 10 to 60 hours
  • Fines between $100 and $500
  • Fees that can reach up to a few thousand dollars
