R.I. Sec. of State Nellie Gorbea running for governor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea is running for governor.

She made the announcement in a surprise YouTube video on Sunday evening.

According to the video, Gorbea is looking to build “a better Rhode Island” as well as make sure government is “more accountable to the people.” She says she also wants to “bring diverse voices to the table.”

Gorbea has been the Ocean State’s secretary of state for six and a half years.

She would be running against Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee in the Democratic primary in 2022.

Gov. McKee took office in March after former Gov. Gina Raimondo left for Washington, D.C. to join Pres. Biden’s cabinet as commerce secretary.
