Rep. Tanzi says she was sexually harassed at State House

State Rep. Teresa Tanzi is making some serious allegations of sexual harassment, telling ABC6 News that one person in a position of power at the State House told her sexual favors would allow her bills to go further.
Tanzi is not naming the person who said that to her, but does say it was someone who had a higher rank than her when she was a rank and file member. She has been a state representative for Narragansett and South Kingstown for seven years.
"This is the environment that’s ripe for that type of abuse," Tanzi told ABC6 News. "I don’t know if people really understand the scope of what women often face, especially in male dominated professions."
Tanzi says when she was harassed, she felt as if she had no recourse. "The only option was going to the Human Rights Commission because the type of work place I work in I don’t have a boss, I don’t have a superior per say, and it afforded me no real protection."
So she kept quiet, until now, inspired by the #MeToo movement, which encourages women to speak out about sexual harassment and assault.
Tanzi says she’s not the only lawmaker on Smith Hill who has been sexually harassed. "Rest assured that this is to fight future problems and prevent future problems from happening," Tanzi said.
She feels this type of behavior could be reduced if more women are in positions of power. She is working with Speaker Mattiello to examine current laws regarding sexual harassment and assault in order to determine what needs to be improved.
Meanwhile, she says she is humbled by the support she’s received, from top level state officials to people at the grocery store.
Fellow House Finance Committee member, Chairman Marvin Abney, calls Tanzi’s revelations brave. "I’m so glad that she’s cleansing herself of soemthing that’s probably been bothering her for a real long time."
The Governor said this type of behavior won’t be tolerated. "Too often sexual harassment or bullying is just shoved under the carpet,” said Governor Gina Raimondo.
Republican state rep Bobby Nardolillo praised Rep. Tanzi’s courage.
“Teresa was very brave to speak out, which is extremely difficult. Now we need to address these wrongdoings to prevent it from ever happening again. She needs to let authorities know the individual or individuals,” said Nardolillo.
Nardolillo also opening up about his own sexual abuse as a child.
"Over 25 years has passed. Still everyday I wake up and wish it never happened. My innocence as a child was robbed from me, but everyday I find it in my heart to be strong,” said Nardolillo.
GOP Chair Brandon Bell says what Rep Tanzi says happened is despicable. He’s encouraging her to name the person who did it so they can face punishment.
"If a grain of this is true, they should be removed from the State House immediately,” said Bell.
House Speaker Nick Mattiello saying in a statement that sexual harassment in the workplace is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“I support Representative Tanzi’s efforts to introduce legislation in January to create a commission to review Rhode Island’s policies on sexual harassment. Further, I will be contacting a human resources professional to provide training to House members and staff at the beginning of the next legislative session,” said Mattiello.
