‘All Black Lives Matter’ mural revealed in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- An “All Black Lives Matter” mural was revealed in Providence on Saturday afternoon.
The mural in Kennedy Plaza includes designs that support indigenous, Pan-African, and LGBTQ communities.
The project has been in the works for over a year and was made possible by local artists as well as the Providence Department of Art, Culture, and Tourism.
However, not everyone is for the project. Black Lives Matter of Rhode Island says that they weren’t notified about the mural’s production.
They say being excluded goes against their message.
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza was at Saturday’s event, giving a response to the group’s issues with the production.
“We’ve spoken with that group and creating communication. I think everyone agrees that this is something that advances everyone’s cause. I think it’s a matter of sitting down getting on the same page and make sure we can celebrate together and I think that is going to happen,” he said.
Artists will be continuing to finish the mural ahead of the city’s Juneteenth celebration, where the official ribbon cutting ceremony will be held.
