SCITUATE, R.I. (WLNE) — Police say a student brought a B.B. gun to Hope Elementary school Tuesday morning. ABC6 News was told that the student will be criminally charged.

The school was never on lock down and school officials want to make it clear, this is very different from what happened last Wednesday, when a middle school student sent a snap chat threatening to “shoot up the school.”

Parent pick up at Hope Elementary School going on as normal, students safe despite a hectic morning. A 5th grader brought an air soft gun to school today, the principal quickly confiscating it after the boy told a friend he had it.

"I’m pleased that they handled it so well,” says Huafen Wang.

School officials say there was absolutely no threat made, the Superintendent telling ABC 6 the student made a "poor choice" bringing the BB gun to school.

Still, police were brought in to investigate and they say they’ll be filing charges.

"That child should know that’s not allowed. And that teachers and other children will not do this type of thing,” says Wang.

Parents were told about the situation in an email this afternoon but because there was no imminent threat, they didn’t receive a phone call.

This situation very different from last week when there was a heavy police presence at the schools after a student made a violent threat. Some parents glad that today’s incident wasn’t blown out of proportion.

"I think at that age they’re just not capable of knowing what’s right and what’s wrong. I think at that age they’re going to make those mistakes and we’re talking about a BB gun, not that it couldn’t hurt somebody but still,” says Arthur Garceau.

The school cannot comment on what consequences the student will face but the Superintendent says he was "seriously disciplined."
