EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police are investigating a crash that claimed the lives of two Massachusetts men on Tuesday.

Steven Magan, 40, of Palmer, M.A., and a passenger, Axel Moran, 38, of Marlboro, M.A., were pronounced dead at the scene, after the box truck they were in was crushed in between two tractor-trailers on I-195 West near exit 8.

“All westbound travel lanes on Interstate 195, except the breakdown lane, were blocked for about five hours during the investigation, impacting traffic throughout the area. The high-speed eastbound lane also was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene,” said spokesperson for the Rhode Island State Police Laura Meade-Kirk.

It is believed that the crash occurred when the first tractor-trailer and a box truck slowed down for traffic.

“The driver of the first tractor-trailer truck was not injured,” Meade-Kirk noted, “the driver of the second tractor-trailer truck was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.”

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
