Fall River man held without bail for fatal shooting on David Street
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – A 24-year-old Fall River man facing murder charges was arraigned in New Bedford District Court Thursday morning.
24-year-old Daquan Blanchard is charged with murder and carrying an illegal firearm. Police believe he’s responsible for the shooting death of 36-year-old Adilson Neves on June 2.
A judge decided that Blanchard should be held without bail.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the shooting happened on June 2 around 3:00 p.m. New Bedford Police found Neves shot in front of a warehouse on 67 David Street.
Police say Neves was taken to the hospital where he later died.
At that time, police did not know who was responsible for the death and were combing through surveillance video for answers. The community was left unnerved and looking for answers.
“People just don’t know how to talk to one another anymore,” David Lima, member of Inter-Church Council of New Bedford said. “When we don’t talk to one another and things start to get irrational, then we end up with irrational methods of dealing with it.”
“I have to move,” neighbor Cara Medeiros said. “There’s no way I want to stay here. I don’t feel safe around here; at all. It’s crazy; I have two kids and what if we were out here?”
The suspect was later tracked down by US Marshalls who were acting on intelligence developed by District Attorney Quinn’s State Police Detective Unit, New Bedford Police and the state police’s Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section.
Blanchard was found hiding in a closet inside a home in Greenville, N.C.
31-year-old Cheyanne Miranda was also arrested in Fall River earlier this month by members of District Attorney Quinn’s Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit and New Bedford Police. She is charged with being an Accessory to Murder-After the Fact. According to police, Miranda has been a New Bedford resident most of her life, but very recently moved to Fall River.
The judge also decided that Blanchard cannot be in contact with Miranda or any other witnesses from the crime.
