FOXBORO, Mass. (WLNE) — New England Patriots fans are anxious to welcome NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell back to Gillette Stadium Thursday night where he will be greeted with thousands of cartoonish clown face towels.
The face, of course, is his with a big red nose attached.
It is a rebellion by loyal fans over the commissioners’ heavy handed approach to ‘Deflategate’. Organizers want to make sure his trip to Gillette is a memorable one.
“Operation Clown Face” is no joke. In fact, 70,000 of the clown towels are going to be handed out before the game as Commissioner Goodell comes to Gillette to see the Super Bowl banner unveiled.
While the 2016 NFL season ended in epic fashion for the New England Patriots, their fan base does not have short memories.
This time last year, Tom Brady was serving a four game suspension for ‘Deflategate’.
The man responsible for handing down that punishment was NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Goodell will be back at Gillette Stadium Thursday night for the season opener.
“We just feel like Roger Goodell hasn’t been to Gillette in a while. He’s obligated to come because we are super bowl champions and we want to support our team.”
Barstool Sports has taken the lead on organizing the “Welcome Party” by handing out powder blue towels featuring Goodell with a clown nose, and tailgaters are simply eating them up.
They anxiously lined up by the thousands Wednesday night to get a box to hand out to other fans before kickoff Thursday night.
“We contacted barstool tonight and met up at the location to get some towels for all the people we tailgate with in the P-7 handicap section.”
Barstool says they have handed out 60,000 towels already and they will hand out the remaining 10,000 Thursday at their tailgate on route one.
Patriots’ ownership has not banned the towels from the stadium, but Barstool does recommend keeping your towel under wraps until fans get inside and for those handing out the towels, do so responsibly.
“One towel, everybody knows the rules. Go pats!”
Several people who picked up towels Wednesday tried selling them on eBay.
