MA Teacher spending summer in Barcelona reacts to terror attack

Brittany Ritland, a teacher in Massachusetts, is still trying to wrap her head around the pure terror that unfolded on the streets of Barcelona just hours ago.

"It was terrifying. I mean I walked those streets every single day,” said Ritland.

Ritland FaceTimed with ABC6 News from Prague. She and her husband moved to Barcelona for the summer, but are currently traveling elsewhere. She says the apartment she rented is just about five minutes from the site of the attack.

"You never expect something like that to happen. It’s where I walk to get something to eat, pick up my groceries and to think that I walked down that street that could have been me,” said Ritland.

Ritland says she never felt unsafe in Barcelona, adding that the latest violence just goes to show attacks can strike anywhere.

"I’ve been in touch with about three people so far. One’s our landlord and a couple of other friends and they said they’re safe,” said Ritland.

The 28–year–old and her husband will be traveling back to Barcelona in the next few days. Despite what happened, she says she’s not afraid and refuses to let terrorists win,” said Ritland.

"I just think that if you succumb to these acts of terror and you have that fear within you then you’re just letting them win,” said Ritland.
