Senator Reed condemns ‘white supremacists’ during violence in Virginia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued a statement condemning the "white supremacist" rallies in Charlottesville, Va.
The Associated Press reported hundreds of protesters clashing in Charlottesville, Va. during a white nationalist rally protesting the city’s decision to remove a confederate statue from a city park, and a gathering of counter-protesters.
Democratic Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe issued a state of emergency early Saturday afternoon, according to the AP.
The AP also reported vehicle plowed into a group of counter-protesters at the rally. Injuries are currently unknown.
“I condemn this disgraceful, hate-filled, un-American gathering of white supremacists," Reed said in a statement.
"The surest way to defeat this type of bigotry and hateful ideology is to stand up against discrimination and prejudice in all its forms and strive for true equality.”
