Newport fire damages historic homes

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Several historic homes in Newport were damaged in an overnight fire Tuesday.

Crews responded to the area of numbers 18 and 20 on Second Street at approximately 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

According to the Newport Fire Department, a dog that lived on number 18 on Second Street died in the fire.

A firefighter was also treated for heat exhaustion.

The home at 18 on Second Street was heavily damaged while number 20 suffered a fair amount of damage.

The Red Cross was called to assist those who were affected by the fire.

The cause still remains under investigation.
