CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A U.S. Coast Guard and Charlestown Marine Rescue search following reports of an overturned kayak yielded only the abandoned boat, according to a press release.
A two-hour-long search of the area around 706 Charlestown Beach Rd., and the absence of any reported missing or overdue persons from the area led responders to discontinue the search, according to Deputy Chief of the Charlestown Police Rescue Division Andrew Kettle.
Just before 5 p.m. Friday, water rescue units responded to the area for reports of an overturned kayak. When first responders arrived, they found a red overturned and partially submerged kayak with no boaters immediately visible. No one was reported missing or overdue from that area at the time.
The Charlestown Harbormaster brought the kayak ashore and Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Police were notified.
Anyone with information about the kayak is asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England’s command center at 508-457-3211.
