A battle over doughboys is frying up in Warwick. A new restaurant specializing in the fried dough is opening directly next door to the wildly popular Iggy’s Doughboys.
"Everyone’s in support except one,” said James Rengigas, the owner of Mrs. Gus’s Doughboys.
Based on court documents, S.G. Associates, the owner of Iggy’s, tried to fight the opening of the new restaurant. After the Warwick Zoning Board granted Rengigas several variances to build his restaurant, S.G. Associates pushed back. The years-long legal battle came to an end this week in Superior Court when a judge ruled in Rengigas’ favor.
“Not everyone can have a monopoly,” Rengigas said.
He says construction is set to begin on Mrs. Gus’s Doughboys this fall. Gus’s has a long history in Rhode Island dating back to 1924 when the first restaurant opened. Coincidentally, it’s where Iggy’s is now.
"We’re old school we haven’t changed our recipes in years,” Rengigas said.
ABC6 reached a representative from Iggy’s over the phone. They had no comment on the court’s decision.
Mrs. Gus’s Doughboys is expected to open its doors in April of 2018.
