WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – A 41-year-old North Providence woman died Sunday afternoon in a boating accident in the waters off of Conimicut Point in Warwick.

Officials say Kerrie Macaruso died after a rogue wave hit the boat that she was on as she was attempting to walk through an opening towards the bow of the vessel.

Macaruso was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

ABC6 spoke to a local boater about the conditions in the area.

“It’s unusual for that to happen, but certainly not out of the ordinary, as far as what you might experience in Narragansett Bay with the shallow points and the steep points."

Macaruso’s vessel, a 1991 Stingray, was taken into custody by DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement as they are currently investigating the incident.
