WAREHAM, M.A.— Nine children and three adults were rescued after the boat they were in capsized early Wednesday evening.

An 18 to 20-foot sailboat appeared to be overloaded with passengers, authorities said, and was struggling against the waves around 4:40 p.m.

Coast Guard officials then received a call from a Good Samaritan reporting a boat had overturned and that twelve people were in the water near Hog Island Channel in Buzzards Bay. That person was able to rescue all but an 8-year-old male.

“An Environmental Police officer and another individual searched for the child. When he was found, the child was taken onboard an Environmental Police vessel and found to be unresponsive. An Environmental Police officer and the Marion Assistant Harbormaster performed CPR on the child until the boat reached Tempest Knob in Wareham. The child was first taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, and is now being airlifted to a Boston hospital,” said Environmental Police in a press release.

The diver that rescued the boy was Michael Margulis with Extreme Marine Diving.

"I was lucky enough to find that person with a life jacket on in the hull of the boat that was upside down," says Margulis.

Eight children and three adults had no serious injuries, although one adult and the eight children were taken to be examined at Tobey Hospital, Environmental Police noted.

The investigation is ongoing.
