PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A red-tailed hawk is healing after being shot in the wing with an air pellet officials say.

The federally protected bird was found with a fractured wing on May 24th, in Providence.

“X-Rays revealed that this bird had been shot with an air pellet which had penetrated and fractured the bone in his wing rendering him unable to fly,” said a post on the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island Facebook page.

“The nature of is injury was reported to RI DEM as Red-tailed Hawks are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Act. It is illegal to shoot, harm, harass, take or injure them in any way,” the post noted.
