WARWICK — A Warwick family has raised nearly $5,000 for childhood cancer research by running a lemonade stand. This is the family’s fourth year doing this and it’s all part of Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a foundation that uses lemonade stands to raise money and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer.

A lemonade stand is always a welcome sight on a nice June day but this stand is extra sweet.

"It’s fun helping people when they need it," says 10 year old Alexandra Luca.

With every cup she and her little sister Avery serve, they raise more money for childhood cancer. They’ve hosted a lemonade stand for the past four years raising $4,800 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

"We learned that only 4% of national funds for cancer go to pediatric cancer research so this helps," says their mom Jen.

The cause is personal, many years ago the Luca family lost a cousin to childhood cancer. Now they want their kids to know they can help families going through the same.

"We want them to learn how to give back and be a part of the community and we want them to be able to help other people in any way that they can," says their dad Tom.

2,000 other stands will be set up the first 2 weeks of June for Alex’s Lemonade Days, a nationwide event that took off after Alex Scott started selling lemonade. Last year the Luca family served special guests, Alex’s grandparents, who are from Rhode Island and heard about their stand.

This year the girls raised $1,300 which will cover 26 hours of cancer research. That brings their 4 year total up to $4,800, enough to cover 96 hours of research.
