PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – DCYF officials are investigating following the report of the near death of a two-year-old girl.

The toddler, officials say, was admitted to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Thursday.

ABC6 News learned the toddler, as well as 3-year-old child, were rushed to the hospital from a home on Huxley Ave after eating edible marijuana on Thursday.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin said the drug was legally prescribed to an elderly relative battling cancer.

The 3-year-old has since been released from the hospital.

It’s not clear yet if any charges will be filed.

“The family was previously involved with DCYF,” said a press release issued to ABC6 News. “We are investigating allegations of abuse and/or neglect.”

If there are concerns of abuse or neglect Rhode Islanders are encouraged to call 1-800-RI-CHILD within 24 hours.
