PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) – Owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox are asking Rhode Island for $23 million to help finance a new $83 million ballpark project near downtown Pawtucket.

PawSox Chairman Larry Lucchino and Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien announced the plans Tuesday at the city’s historic Slater Mill. The proposal is being called “Ballpark at Slater Hill” because it would be built just across the river.

The Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox says it will invest $45 million to build the stadium. The rest _ $23 million sought from the state and $15 million sought from Pawtucket _ would come through bond agreements paid back from stadium revenue.

Lucchino says the team learned a lesson after its 2015 request for state subsidies for a new stadium in Providence met strenuous public opposition.
