Three teens charged in Woonsocket murder

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) – Woonsocket Police have charged three people in the shooting death of a 17-year-old Woonsocket girl.

Jose Ortiz Martinez, 18, of Woonsocket, has been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He was arraigned in District Court on Friday and held without bail.

Two 17-year-olds are facing the same charges and appeared in Family Court on Friday.

In a press conference, the Woonsocket Police Chief said more arrests could be coming and one other adult is a person of interest.

NyAsia Williams-Thomas, 17, was shot and killed Wednesday night at the Plaza Village Apartments in Woonsocket. Police said she was sitting behind the wheel of an SUV when a vehicle pulled up and fired shots.

Thomas tried to drive away and hit several cars parked in the complex’s lot in the process before stopped on Village Road. That’s where police found her unresponsive, slumped over the wheel.

Woonsocket Police said two others were in the SUV with Thomas, a 21-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy.

Police Chief Thomas Oates said the 14-year-old was the target of the shooters.

“It’s just tragic that this poor young girl lost her life in a senseless act of violence that certainly didn’t need to happen,” said Chief Oates

Thomas was brought to Landmark Medical Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The two others in the SUV were taken to police headquarters for questioning. Neither were injured.

A candlelight vigil was held for NyAsia on Thursday night at Saint James Baptist Church in Woonsocket.

“She was the sweetest lady ever. She put smiles on everyone’s faces,” said classmate Brandon Issler.

“I extend our sincerest thoughts and prayers to her family, friends, and the Woonsocket community during this incredibly difficult time,” said Superintendent Patrick McGee. “Please know that we will do everything that we can to help our students through this experience.”

Friends of Thomas tell ABC6 News she was known as “Ny Ny.” They describe her as an outgoing, happy teenager who was full of life and energy.
