Family raising money for East Providence man hit by uninsured driver while crossing the road

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – An East Providence man is slowly recovering after being hit by a driver last weekend, but he’s stuck footing his own medical bills as the driver who hit him was uninsured.

John Bradley, 21, suffered serious injuries after a driver struck him while he was crossing Evergreen Drive in East Providence on Sunday. Bradley was dropping his girlfriend off at the RIPTA bus stop at the time.

“The (driver) went around the bus when he was crossing the street to go home and hit him,” said Alexandra Bradley, John’s sister.

John fractured his skull, jaw, and eye socket, his sister said, and he also suffered a brain hemorrhage as his head hit a curb.

“We came down here when it happened and he was, like, waving at us as he was getting put in the ambulance, but they said when he was on the ride there he went very downhill, and then he ended up having a seizure. They found that very alarming and found the brain damage that it had caused,” said Alexandra. “They couldn’t tell us if he was gonna live or not at that point cause the bleeding was pretty bad.”

According to Alexandra, the driver, an 18-year-old woman, didn’t have insurance and was behind the wheel of an unregistered car.

“We just thought that she shouldn’t have even been on the road, especially in a rush to go somewhere.”

John was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday but has a long road to recovery ahead. He’ll need brain surgery in a few weeks, his sister said.

With the driver being uninsured, the family now has the burden of his mounting medical bills. Alexandra started a GoFundMe to help with the expenses.

“He just works, like, a minimum wage job and he’s just been, like, trying to get on his feet and get a car right now himself, and now he can’t drive for at least six months they said cause he had a seizure.”

The family is considering pressing charges, and hope drivers learn a lesson from their situation.

“I hope people learn to pay attention while driving because you never know, it could be one of your family members that could get hit.”
