CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – The Department of Environmental Management announced Thursday that West Nile Virus has been detected in a Rhode Island mosquito for the first time this summer.

This is the only confirmed West Nile sample out of 70 mosquitos tested on July 29. The DEM says West Nile Virus will only become more prevalent as the season progresses, so Rhode Islanders should take care to reduce their exposure to mosquitos until the first frost.

So far, 37 mosquitos in Connecticut and 38 in Massachusetts have also tested positive for West Nile Virus.

No mosquitos have been found with Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), according to the DEM.

Mosquitos are captured and tested weekly in Rhode Island. For tips on protecting yourself from mosquitos, head to the DEM’s website.
