PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Rhode Island Sen. Gayle Goldin announced on Tuesday that she will be stepping down from her seat representing Providence to join the Biden administration.

Goldin sent her letter of resignation to Secretary Nellie Gorbea on Tuesday morning.

In the letter, she said that her resignation takes effect immediately.

“I have spent nearly 25 years working to challenge gender and racial inequities in our public policies in Rhode Island and nationally. I’m lucky that I have both a professional career and a role in public service that lets me lead with my values every day,” the letter read.

Goldin will take on a Senior Advisor role in the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau.

She said that she looks forward to continuing to fight for racial and gender equity as a member of the Biden administration.
