PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Providence man has been sentenced to serve 18 years behind bars for his role in a violent armed home invasion four years ago.

Prosecutors say 25-year-old Ephraim Durrett was sentenced Thursday to 69 years in prison, with 18 years to serve and the remainder suspended with probation.

Authorities say in May 2013, Durrett broke into a city home where three children lived while wearing a black ski mask and armed with a gun with the intent to rob the residents.

During the robbery, Durrett pistol whipped and punched the mother as she attempted to protect her children.

He had previously pleaded guilty to first -degree robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy.

The gun used in the assault and robbery was never recovered.
