SCITUATE, R.I. –Students at Scituate High School and Middle School were sent home early after the vice principal found what he thought was a suspicious package in his office on Thursday.
It turned out to be a metal name plate that was sent to him, but he wasn’t expecting it.
Police said they could not take any chances so they evacuated all 800 students, and detonated the nameplate.
"You have to you can’t take anything – or dismiss anything – in today’s world unfortunately, and everybody handled it perfectly," said Scituate Police Chief Donald R. Delaere.
The package was found around 11:00 a.m. this morning; students were immediately evacuated.
The scene was cleared two hours later.
No additional information is available at this time.
