N. Providence Chief announces retirement

N. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – It has been announced that North Providence Police Chief, David Tikoian, is said to retire January 1, 2020, after 25+ years in law enforcement.
Chief Tikoian said that is has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve as Police Chief for the North Providence Police Department.
Tikoian remarked that the department was given a unique position to witness firsthand, the remarkable transformation required by the inordinate amount of time, energy, dedication, cooperation and above all, professional, competent leadership in order to be realized.
Chief Tikoian stated that he remains proud of the numerous positive accomplishments that have taken place in the agency and community during my tenure and with your support.
Some of these accomplishments include:
- Increased officer presence in the community with abundant outreach engagement initiatives
- Additional Resource Officers assigned to our schools
- New, functional patrol uniforms as well as a detail uniform policy
- Instilling a professional, respectful culture and decorum within the department
- Resolutions to a host of grievances initiated under prior administrations
- Positive relationships forged with faith-based and social services agencies such as St. Mary’s Home for Children and Tri-County.
- Hosting formal, promotional and award ceremonies, recognizing members’ accomplishments.
- Re-establishment of our K-9 Unit.
- Enhanced firearm proficiency training, augmenting or newly purchased weapon system.
- Ratification of a multi-year collective bargaining agreement for our officers
- Creation and implementation of administrative and operational policies
- Promoting the value of volunteerism in the community among our officers
- Respectful, positive working relationship with FOP Lodge 13
- Publication of an agency Annual Report
- Fostering a department-wide outlook of transparency with the public and media
- The successful construction of a new, state of the art, Public Safety Complex, completed on time and under budget
Upon reflecting back on his service he believes that he was the right person at the right time to provide the transformational leadership the department so desperately needed.
Tikoian stated that he is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to fulfill several personal and professional goals that his late father had instilled in him from a young age.
He feels as though that in his mind the achievement is not measured in a number of years, but rather what was achieved during those years.
“Together we have achieved an enormous amount both within and outside of the department, in a relatively short time,” Tikoian said.
Now, he taking the time to explore other career opportunities outside law enforcement and handing the torch to the next leader of the agency.
The department is being left with capable and seasoned hands, Deputy Chief Arthur Martins.
Tikoian holds very high regard for the trust and confidence of Chief Martins and the future of the North Providence Police Department.
