North Smithfield woman dead after crash on Route 146 South

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island State Police are investigating a crash that left a 78-year-old woman dead Friday morning.

According to State Police, a white SUV occupied by the woman was stopped in traffic in the high-speed lane, where it was rear-ended by a box truck. Police say this caused a multi-car crash.

The woman, identified as Frances Furnell, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the box truck, Andre Gilbert, 27, is charged with:

  • Driving to endanger/reckless driving, death resulting
  • Driving to endanger/reckless driving, serious bodily injury.
