Cranston to hold hearing on traffic cameras on Monday night

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE)- Cranston will be holding a public hearing regarding its newly installed traffic cameras around the city on Monday night.

Cranston is one of three Rhode Island municipalities to have installed traffic cameras as part of a 60-day trial period.

City Council members will meet just one week after the ACLU sent a letter to the leaders of Cranston, Woonsocket, and Pawtucket, calling on them to stop using the cameras.

The ACLU said that the cameras are a privacy concern and were installed with no public notice or guidance.

Colonel Michael Winquist of the Cranston Police Department said that the cameras do not record people or faces.

If a photo is not used within 30 days, it is deleted, according to Col. Winquist.

The meeting will be at 8 p.m. at Cranston City Hall.
