NEW BEDFORD, MA – It was supposed to be a quick ride for Mitchell Gauvin and Ivan Brody.  The New Bedford paramedics were responding to help a mother who was delivering a baby, at her home.

"On the way we got updated by our dispatch that the baby had already come out,” said Gauvin.

The two first responders told ABC6 they arrived a little bit late Saturday, due to icy road conditions. Fire crews and police had already helped with a successful delivery. The only job left was to bring the mother and her newborn to the hospital.

"They brought the mother out, put her on a stretcher and then put her in the ambulance,” explained Brody.  “We started going to the hospital."

Little did they know that driving to Saint Lukes hospital through gusty winds and snow, was the easy part.  Just minutes away and without warning, the mother began going into labor again.

"It was never mentioned to us that she was having twins,” said Brody.

With quick thinking both paramedics Helped the frantic mother deliver a second baby.  This time, inside the ambulance as it rolled into the hospital parking lot.  According to Brody and Gauvin, the mother either did not know or failed to mention that she was having twins.

"A call like that is always nerve wracking, I mean, especially when you’re not expecting a second child to come out. But as long as you fall back on your training and rely on your experience… It was a great call it came out great,” said Gauvin.
