P-Bruins Beat Springfield on Alex Grant’s Goal in Overtime

Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield ThunderBirds Sunday afternoon 2-1 in overtime at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Zac Rinaldo and Alex Grant scored goals for Providence while Zane McIntyre started in net for the second half of a weekend home-and-home series.
After a quiet start, Providence opened the scoring at 7:24. Justin Hickman took a shot from the left dot which Mike McKenna was able to stop, but Rinaldo took the rebound and went top right corner to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead and register his second goal of the season. Springfield outshot the Bruins 16-5, but McIntyre refused to let anything by.
The ThunderBirds finally snuck one by to tie the score at 5:47 in the second period. While on the power play, Mike Sgarbossa found open space at the top of the right circle and hit the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Shane Harper and Sena Acolaste picked up assists on the play as the score was tied 1-1 entering the second intermission.
The third period was dominated by Springfield, who outshot the Bruins 16-5 but McIntyre stood tall and the teams went to overtime for the second consecutive night.
At 2:39 in the OT, Grant skated up the boards on the right side and sent a wrist shot in for the game winning goal. Colby Cave picked up the lone assist on Grant’s sixth goal of the season and the P-Bruins walked away 2-1 winners.
McIntyre played great between the pipes, stopping 38 of 39 shots while McKenna stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced. The P-Bruins were 0-5 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill. Providence is off until Friday, when they return to the Dunkin Donuts Center to take on the Toronto Marlies at 7:05.
