BRAINTREE, M.A. – Officials say equipment failure may be to blame for the death of a diver who reported losing air while inspecting a massive, municipal water tank in Braintree.
A Kentucky-based family business was performing the inspection Thursday when officials say the father became trapped inside. A son dove in to help, but later had to be pulled out of the large, cylindrical tank by rescue crews. He was taken to a hospital.
Crews were not able to reach the father. Authorities were draining the 1-million gallon tank to recover the man’s body, a process that was expected to take about 18 hours.
The victim has not been publicly identified.
Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan says "perhaps some of the equipment may have failed, which led to the diver passing away.”
