JOHNSTON, R.I. – A motor vehicle crash involving three cars sent four people to the hospital on Tuesday.
Rhode Island State Police say around 4:10 p.m., troopers responded to the intersection of Route 6 and Bishop Hill Road for the report of the crash, and that a car was also on fire at a nearby Sunoco gas station.
Upon arrival, authorities saw the car fully engulfed at one of the pumps.
Cell phone footage obtained by ABC6 News showed moments after the crash; an empty vehicle up in flames, after just being hit by a car, and spinning into the gas pump.
"I went to the system I activated the fire extinguishers up there and called 9-1-1 that’s all we can do, you know?" said Zeshan Habid, the owner of the Sunoco Station.
Habid, as well as the driver of the burned car were inside the convenience store when it happened.
"That guy hit this guy over here that was parked at the pump, and that’s how it started. There was fire," said Habid.
The driver of the burned vehicle told ABC6 News she saw a car swerve off of Hartford Ave and smash into her car, which went straight into another pump and burst into flames.
The car that struck the engulfed car landed on the side of the road; damaged beyond repair.
A witness told ABC6 News one passenger was thrown from the car.
Another person was trapped, forcing crews to use the Jaws of Life to take that driver out of the vehicle.
"You can rebuild a business again but, you know, its just the lives. Those poor people. I pray for them, you know. Those young kids," said Habid.
Multiple crews from the neighboring towns responded to the scene.
Two people were transported with life threatening injuries, two others were transported with serious injuries.
Rhode Island State Police are investigating, and encourage anyone that saw the crash to immediately contact them at 401-444-1000.
