PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island state Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed says she’s taking a wait-and-see approach to Republican President-elect Donald Trump.
The Newport Democrat said in a recent interview that it’s too soon to know what actual policies will be implemented by the incoming administration.
She says she’s hopeful that Democrat-led states such as Rhode Island, which backed Hillary Clinton, will be treated as fairly as other states in federal funding.
Paiva Weed says Trump’s interest in boosting the military makes Rhode Island’s defense economy an area for potential collaboration with the incoming administration.
She’s hoping that Rhode Island’s work on health care reform and getting people insured will be seen as a bipartisan model.
But she adds the state must be prepared to react if Trump proposes major changes to Medicaid.
