NEWPORT, R.I. – Newport has taken another step toward a citywide ban on plastic shopping bags.
The Newport Daily News reports that the city planning board this week unanimously approved a proposed ordinance that would ban the use of single-use plastic bags.
The board forwarded the ordinance to the City Council.
The ordinance is based on one already in effect in Barrington, the only community in Rhode Island with such a ban.
The City Council is expected to receive the proposed ordinance in January.
The council holds two public hearings on any proposed ordinance and takes both an initial vote and a final vote before an ordinance is enacted.
Proponents say the ban would help clean up the local environment.
The ordinance encourages people to bring reusable carryout bags when shopping.
