PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence police are searching for 41-year-old Alberto Rivera after they say he broke into his ex-wife’s home over the weekend and shot her boyfriend in the same room as Rivera’s 2 kids.

It all happened around 3 am on Sunday. The kids were asleep on the living room sofa and Rivera’s ex and her boyfriend were sleeping in the bedroom.

"Suddenly there was the noise of what they thought was breaking glass," said Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin.

From there, the two adults walked into their living rooom to find Rivera armed with a gun.

The 34-year-old man, Juan Croussett, stepped in front of his girlfriend to protect her. It was at that point that Rivera shot him.

"It shows the mindset of this man to do that with his children in the room," said Lapatin.

Rivera managed to escape prompting police to put this warning out to residents.

"We ask everyone if you do see him to not approach him just to call us as soon as you can in the most safe manner as possible," said Lapatin.

This is not the first time he’s been a wanted man.

Earlier this year a warrant was issued in Cranston for Rivera for attempting to run down an officer with his car.

"He is considered very dangerous," said Lapatin.

Police say Croussett was rushed into emergency surgery but is expected to survive.
