Sandy Hook families create powerful gun violence PSA

Nearly four years after 20 first graders and six educators were gunned down in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, an organization created by some of their family members released a powerful PSA aimed to prevent gun violence
The video from the Sandy Hook Promise Organization is part of the “Know the Signs” campaign.
It follows a teenage boy Evan nearing summer break. You watch him write back and forth on the desk of a library with a pen-pal of sorts. But then, the 2 minute video takes an odd twist. Just as Evan meets the girl he’s been speaking with a gunman enters the scene and the PSA shows a message reading, “while you were watching Evan another student was showing the signs of planning a shooting.” The video then backtracks to show all of the signs you as the viewer missed.
"The hope is awareness that people look at this issue from a different perspective and that they learn something from it,” said Nicole Hockley the co-founder of Sandy Hook Promise.
Hockley who grew up in Cranston lost her 6-year-old son Dylan in the Sandy Hook massacre. Now, she’s devoting her life to preventing tragedies like the one in Newtown.
"It’s rocked everyone that I know in every way shape and form. And, all I want to do is prevent other families from experiencing this grief and protecting children in particular from preventable gun violence,” said Hockley.
The PSA aims to teach people about the warning signs some of the big ones include chronic social isolation, constant bullying or bullying of others and excessive aggression or overreactions.
"I want to build a positive future for my surviving son Jake and I want to deliver a positive legacy for my son Dylan in saving the lives of others,” said Hockley.
