New Bedford police arrest ‘serial armed robber’

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE)- New Bedford police arrested a man on Friday who had committed a series of armed robberies.
Christopher Daponte, 43, committed all five robberies in New Bedford this year.
He went about each robbery the same way, pointing a gun at the cashier and demanding cash.
Daponte committed the following robberies:
- April 23, at Walgreen’s pharmacy located at 2170 Acushnet Ave.
- April 29, at St. Anne’s Credit Union located at 3087 Acushnet Ave.
- May 12, at St. Anne’s Credit Union located at 3087 Acushnet Ave.
- September 24, at Mechanic’s cooperative bank 1238 Kempton St.
- October 5, at Mechanic’s cooperative bank 1238 Kempton St.
Investigators searched Daponte’s apartment and found the pellet gun and clothes that he used during the robberies.
During the search, officers also found a small amount of fentanyl.
Daponte was charged with armed robbery while masked, confining, or putting someone in fear to steal, as well as drug possession.
