PROVIDENCE, RI – High profile Democrats including Hillary Clinton took a stand Wednesday to urge Americans upset with the results of the presidential election, to accept Donald Trump.

"We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead,” Clinton said.

It was a message missed by many who took to the streets around the country to protest.  Hundreds rallied on the Providence State House steps Wednesday evening.

"I’m accepting what has happened, yes, but that doesn’t mean we have to be okay with it,” one protestor told ABC6 News.

Chants echoed through downtown, as many marched holding signs. Some read, “Love trump hates,” and others, laced with profanity, mocking the President-elect.

"Humans have a right to be who we are, as we are, unapologetic with no explanation to anyone. This man tries to take away every fiber of your being,” another protestor said.

Concerns were raised about Trump’s policy on immigration, treatment of women and gay rights.

"He is a dangerous man that has run on a campaign of hate, misogyny, racism,” said one.

"As a woman and as a queer person, my rights are going to be taken away."

Others said they don’t feel safe under the new President.

"We are scared for going about our every day lives and we want to be heard. We don’t want our rights taken away."
