Diary of a Wimpy Kid author befriends boy after no one shows up to birthday party

A 9–year–old from Oregon devastated when no–one showed up for his birthday party now has a new very famous friend, Plainville author Jeff Kinney.
Kinney who wrote the series Diary of a Wimpy Kid heard what happened to Mahlon Layne and decided to send a special present his way.
Kristen Layne wrote a blog post about the horrible birthday party that went viral. When Mahlon learned what was happening Kristen writes he said, "No one came Dad. I guess I’m not very popular at school,’ and then sobbed.”
Kinney saw that blog post and jumped in to help.
"The story made me really sad. I saw his mom’s blog post and I immediately reached out to her to see if there was anyway she could connect myself and Mahlon,”said Kinney.
The Plainville author Facetimed the young fan, sending him the very first copy printed of his new book "Double Down."
“He got it before anybody else did and I told him you’ve got to keep this a secret because my publisher would kill me if they find out about this. So, he guarded it very closely,” said Kinney.
He says the two became fast friends.
“I told Mahlon that he’s got a friend in me and he said I’ve got a friend in him. So hopefully this is the start of something that’s long lasting. I’m actually going to get to see him when I go out to the West Coast,” said Kinney.
The message that Kristen wanted to get out in her blog post is for parents to always RSVP, that way situations like what happened to Mahlon can be avoided.
