Police: Man jumped from the Cliff Walk on his own

NEWPORT, R.I.— Police say the 57-year-old man who was med-flighted to Rhode Island Hospital with life threatening injuries admitted to jumping from Newport’s Cliff Walk on his own.
It happened just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday near Webster Street right in front of Ochre Court, Newport’s second largest mansion and part of Salve Regina University. Initial reports indicated that the man may have fallen, but officials say as he was being treated he admitted to jumping.
Newport first responders arrived at the scene and proceeded down the treacherous rocks where they tied the man to a stretcher. Then, they pulled him back to the top where a medical helicopter was waiting for him. Witnesses tell ABC6 the man was conscious and alert during the rescue.
The man was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital. Authorities have yet to release the man’s name.
