For the past 14 years the historic Silver Top Diner was sitting in a vacant lot on Middle Street in Pawtucket, and now after being sold for $30,500, it has a new owner.

“I remember going to this diner with my grandfather many years ago,” said Al Cerrone.

Al Cerrone and his daughter Katie bought the diner last week at a public auction.

Katie who owns KC’s Classic Burger Bar in North Attleboro is looking to expand that business somewhere in Rhode Island.

“Pawtucket gets first show, if that doesn’t happen we will maybe look at Cumberland or Cranston, anywhere that will be appropriately distant from the place in North Attleboro,” said Al Cerrone.

Silver Top first opened back in the 1930’s but was evicted from its original spot on the corner of Harris and Kinsley Ave, in Providence in 2002 and moved to Pawtucket after receiving federal assistance.

Although a new location is up in the air right now one thing is for sure the Cerrone’s want to honor the diner’s historic significance.

“There is an expert on diners right here in Rhode island and I plan on getting in touch with him to have him look at this to see if it can be restored at a price that’s doable,” said Al Cerrone. “The plan to serve up everything from breakfast to burgers, milk shakes, hot dogs, the same stuff we have at KC’s.”

As for a new name, Al Cerrone says “I would love to call it Big Al’s… I don’t know how well that would go over with my daughter Katie, but we will run it by her!”

The Cerrone’s have three months from now to find a new location for the diner.
