Providence, R.I. — Providence will soon have a sister city in Guatemala.

The former Guatemalan president and current mayor of Guatemala City, Alvaro Arzu, will visit Rhode Island this week and sign the agreement on Wednesday at city hall.

Mayor Jorge Elorza hopes the agreement linking Providence with Guatemala City will help strengthen economic ties with the country.

Providence has cultural ties to the country. Nearly 27,000 people of Guatemalan descent live in the city.
