Second man charged in brothers’ murder held without bail, found not guilty

One of the men charged in connection to two unsolved murders from eight years ago faced a judge Wednesday.

Matthew Lander of Swansea was arraigned in Fall River and was held without bail.

Lander along with Keith Cox of Berkeley is accused of shooting and killing brothers Kevin and Shawn Vargas at a studio apartment in February 2008.

Officials say Shawn’s 4-year-old and 2-year-old sons were there when it happened.

The children were not hurt.

Cox faced judge Monday. Lander will be back in court next month.

Lander was found not guilty of two murder charges on September 21, 2021.
