NEW BEDFORD, MASS – City and School officials dedicated the K-9 Sgt. Sean M. Gannon Memorial Playground at Campbell School on Thursday.
Sgt. Gannon was killed in the line of duty on April 12, 2018.
After the playground committee had announced it was seeking donations from the community to support the renovation of the playground, after raising about $20,000.
Some of the first people to support the project were neighbors Patrick and Denis Gannon, just days before their son, Sgt. Gannon died.
After the Playground Committee learned of several connections Sgt. Gannon had to the school, they thought to name the playground after him was a fitting tribute.
The Gannons lived adjacent to the school, and Sgt. Gannon played on the school grounds growing up, and later trained for the police academy on the very same grounds.
The School Committee voted unanimously on May 2018 to support Mayor Jon Mitchell’s motion to honor Sgt. Gannon by naming the playground at Campbell after him.
The Campbell School k-9 Sgt. Sean M. Gannon Memorial Playground Committee has raised over $200,000 to support the reconstruction of the school’s playground.
Campbell Elementary has also changed its mascot name to the K-9s as another way to honor Sgt. Gannon.
